The Gilberd School

Colchester, United Kingdom

Let's clear this up first. The Gilberd School is a secondary school in Highwoods, Colchester, not a gym. Google's types field lists it as a school and an educational institution, the reviews are from pupils and cover staff, and the website is gilberd.com. If you landed here looking for a place to train, this isn't it. But there's still consumer content worth reading, so I'll pull what the reviews actually say.

What the reviews describe

Every review here is about school life, not fitness. A 2014 note from someone who worked a day of cover supervising wrote that "from the word go, I felt supported," and that the pupils were "mostly well behaved." A December 2017 review, brief and mixed, said "it's a good place, but sometimes people get annoyed about rules."

The most detailed one is from April 2016, from a former student comparing it to a grammar school they moved to afterward. They praised the "variety of extra curricular activities" and the way most teachers "balance fun, humour, engaging activities with work and academic support." They also named several specific staff members as standouts. I won't repeat those names here, because singling out individuals from a handful of old reviews isn't fair to them or useful to you.

Where the voices land

The tone is warm but qualified. Two reviews are essentially "good, could be better." One from August 2015 said exactly that: "good enough for me." Another from October 2016 rated it four stars with "I like it, could be better but it's still ok." Nobody is angry, nobody is thrilled. That middle register is honest, and it's the most common note across the set.

What that 4.0 measures

A 4.0 across 22 ratings, for a school, is a small and old sample. Here's the math that matters: with 22 ratings, a single one-star review moves the average by roughly a tenth of a point, so this number is fragile. And the newest review I can date is from December 2017. Everything else is older. That's a record that simply stopped, not evidence of decline. I'd name the shape and leave it there rather than guess why the reviews dried up.

What's missing

There's no fitness content at all, obviously, but also no recent signal of any kind. No catchment details, no Ofsted context, no admissions notes, nothing after 2017. For a parent, these reviews are a faint trace, not a basis for a decision. The school's own website and the current Ofsted report will tell you far more in five minutes than five stale Google reviews will.

Who this page isn't for

Anyone looking for a gym, a fitness class, or a place to lift. This is a school. It's also not for a parent making an enrolment call, because the reviews are too few and too old to lean on.

FAQ

Is The Gilberd School a gym?

No. It's a secondary school in Highwoods, Colchester. Google files it as a school and educational institution, and every review is about school life. It landed in a gym directory by mistake in the listing data.

Are the reviews recent?

No. The newest one I can date is from December 2017, and several go back to 2014 and 2015. Treat them as a historical snapshot, not a current picture.

Should I use these reviews to choose a school?

I wouldn't. With only 22 ratings and nothing after 2017, they're too thin to carry a decision. Check the school's website and the latest Ofsted inspection report instead.

i only learnt to appreciate it as a school since going to a grammar school afterwards - as the gilberd is so good in comparison. there's such a variety of extra curricular activities, most teachers and students know how to balance fun/humour/engaging activities with work and academic support. another asset is that teachers understand that students have strengths in different areas, not just academic, and that students all learn in different ways. some gems for teachers as well like mrs houghton, mr mitchell, mrs pavlov as well as a great PA staff.
