VAHS - Gym in Fitzroy

Fitzroy VIC, Australia

This listing isn't a gym. Google categorizes it as a medical clinic, dental clinic, and doctor's office, and it's the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service in Fitzroy - a community health service offering GP, physio, optometry, and dental care, primarily for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.

Long-Term Patients, Not Gym Members

The clearest signal here is how long people stay. Shayde's review: "Have been going here regularly for over 10 years.. throughout all my ups & downs I have only ever experienced kindness at VAHS; they're like an extended family. My doctor is an amazingly understanding woman, who regularly compliments my efforts and is one of my biggest supporters." Raymond Davey's review makes an even longer claim: "I only use VAHS as I have always received a great service there for over 12 years... It's very culturally safe too. The staff and medical professionals are always friendly, helpful and always professional." Two independent patients, each describing more than a decade of continuous use, is a much stronger signal than a single glowing review - people don't keep returning to a health service for over ten years out of habit alone.

What the Service Actually Offers

Keir Dernelley's review lists the range directly: "VAHS has a number of services you can access which include: GP, physio, optometrist, dental. You can go in and have a complete health check and it takes about an hour or so but it's worth it." That's a specific, practical description - a multi-service health hub rather than a single-purpose clinic, with a comprehensive check-up available to walk-in patients.

A Front-Desk Complaint, Kept to the Substance

Natalie Sean's one-star review describes a specific bad interaction: she called ahead to say she'd be a few minutes late to a dental appointment due to traffic, and found the front-desk response dismissive and pressuring, eventually being told the practice would look for a dentist closer to her rather than honoring the treatment plan she'd already discussed with her dentist. I'm not naming the staff member involved, since this is one person's account of one interaction, not a pattern confirmed elsewhere in the five reviews - but the substance of the complaint is real and specific: she felt rushed off the phone over a few minutes of lateness, and felt her continuity of care was threatened as a result. She's also clear that her partner and daughter's prior visits, and the dentist and assistant she actually saw that day, were excellent - her complaint is narrowly about one staff interaction, not the service generally.

A Scheduling Complaint From 2026

Magenta's review, from April 2026, raises a different, more recent issue: "I booked an emergency appointment and was told to turn up at 9 and I was told to wait for no-shows so they could slot me in. Any other dental service offers priority for emergency appointments but not here." She opens by saying she hates giving a bad review, given what the service means to her community - worth noting as a sign the complaint is about a specific process failure, not a broader loss of confidence in VAHS.

What's Missing

No review states costs, though as a community health service, VAHS may offer bulk-billed or subsidized care that a star rating wouldn't reflect either way - worth confirming directly. Nothing here answers a fitness question, because this isn't a fitness facility.

Who It's Not For

Anyone looking for a gym. This is a medical, dental, and allied-health service, and every review confirms that. Anyone with a tight schedule around emergency dental care specifically, given one recent complaint about triage priority.

Have been going here regularly for over 10 years.. throughout all my ups&downs I have only ever experienced kindness at VAHS; they're like an extended family. My doctor is an amazingly understanding woman, who regularly compliments my efforts and is one of my biggest supporters. I rarely have to wait long if I have an appointment but don't mind waiting to see the duty doctor as the place has such a good vibe. I also like that the staff here occasionally call to confirm my regular monthly checkups, which is nice especially as I need reminding sometimes! Plus having pharmacy on-site is super convenient as well. Have only got nice things to say about everyone here, regardless of whatevers happening I always feel a sense of community and always feel welcomed the second I walk through the doors.

My partner and daughter has been to this service multiple times and the service was always outstanding, warm and courteous. I recently had an appointment where I travelled a long distance to attend. I got stuck in traffic in the city and called 20min before my appointment to say I might be a little bit late due to being stuck in the awful city traffic 8km from the destination. Kayla was awful and rude. She kept asking well how many minutes will that be because I have other people waiting. I obviously don't have a crystal ball Kayla to predict it but my gps says I'll be a couple minutes late. The dentist and assistant I saw was amazing, gentle and compassionate. I apologised for being a bit late and they reassured me it was fine. After my appointment I saw Kayla who immediately said 'ill look for a dentist closer to you' booking my appointment I wanted to keep my future care I discussed with the dentist because a treatment plan was made and I enjoyed the care I received from the dentist she then proceeded to say 'we have good dentists lots of people travel even a patient from SA' I literally pity you and feel sorry for you Kayla, you clearly need a performance review by management and a change of career perhaps? If you work in healthcare like myself you need to treat people with respect and in a caring attitude even if the situation pisses you off
