We visited NOLA for a week and loved practicing here. Great yoga community and teachers. Especially loved taking classes with Dana. Very well designed studio. Highly recommended.
No a positive vibe in this studio. Owner seemed angry and was confronting another business owner as I approached. And the reception I received was unfriendly and curt. I felt bad for instructor. She seemed out of sorts too. I came to de-stress...left before class started. Negative rating in every respect. Stay away!
I was treated horribly in the CBD Restorative Yoga class by Chelsea, who is one of the owners of the studio. She felt entitled to taking the props I borrowed for the class because "someone else needed them and I wasn't using them," despite knowing as the instructor of the class that I would need those very props that I did not need in one pose for the very next pose. Until I asked for a replacement prop, she didn't even acknowledge the facts that 1) I now did not have what I needed and rightfully borrowed for myself in this class, and 2) she was to blame for this. My needs were clearly unimportant, and the other recipient of my prop was seen as more worthy of using it. Had she asked if I was okay with donating my prop(s) for a pose that I didn't need it/them in, I would have happily obliged. But she didn't. I was dismissed in my confrontation to her with the very passive aggressive reply that we'd have to "agree to disagree." Not a single person at the studio replied to the complaint email I sent about what happened. The owners clearly do not respect the people who support their studio, nor do they care about resolving conflicts that they cause. This is extremely unprofessional and tasteless coming from an established business. As a local black woman from the seventh ward, I would never recommend this place to any person of color, nor to any person in general.
I noticed the appropriation of Christian/Baptist symbols and prayers that are traditionally used in African American culture in New Orleans. Yoga is about unity and respect for all people. It is necessary to learn and cherish the cultural and religious traditions of the people of New Orleans, and it is crucial to be culturally sensitive. This studio fails to respect the cultural traditions of New Orleans. In fact, it is exploiting our cultural traditions. As it pertains to the class, the music was too loud and it was difficult to hear the instructions. The sequence was poorly executed and the instructions were minimal and confusing. I’ve practice Yoga for over 8 years, and I am also an exercise physiologist and physical therapist candidate. I found that this class had no emphasis on proper alignment for injury prevention and wellness. Furthermore, the hands-on assists were ineffective. Both teachers forgot to assist students during the entire pose sequence. Also, I do not think it’s appropriate to lightly tickle a student during an assist (which is what Dana did to me and my sister). I would not recommend this class to a beginner, any one who deeply cares about New Orleans and cultural appropriation, persons with injuries or special needs, or experienced Yoga practitioners. Please search for another studio that truly promotes your wellness, cherishes New Orleans, and respects all cultures and religions.
