A full-amenity club, and the reviews reflect it

The strongest review sets the tone. "I absolutely love this gym!" a member wrote in June 2015. "There is always room to do my routine, never packed to the point where I have to wait for any space/machines... the amenities are awesome. Towels, pool, hot tub, sauna." That's the pitch for Commonwealth Sports Club on Commonwealth Ave in Boston: not just a weights floor, but a full club with a pool, sauna and steam room.

What this place actually is

A multi-service club. The listing's types include swimming_pool, yoga_studio and fitness_center, and the reviews back that up. A June 2024 member singled out the recovery side: "The sauna and steam room is also easily the best I've been to, the sauna even has colored LED lights," plus "free towels to use at the front." A January 2017 review adds a "salted water swimming pool." So you're paying for amenities and recovery, not just machines.

Where the voices agree, and the honest caveats

Agreement is broad: clean, spacious, friendly staff, strong amenities. The reviews are also refreshingly honest about flaws without dropping their rating. A January 2026 member who joined so their daughter could swim wrote: "Parking could be a bit closer and the steam room wasn't working, but those are minor issues." I like that kind of review - it tells you the steam room was down at least once, and that parking isn't at the door, while still landing at five stars. Those are the specifics an all-perfect review never gives you.

What that 4.6 measures

4.6 across 137 reviews, spanning 2015 to 2026, is a durable number built over a decade. The consistency is the point: members a decade apart describe the same clean, spacious, amenity-rich club. This isn't a fresh-opening bump or a thin sample - it's a long track record landing just shy of 5. I'd take it seriously.

What's missing

Price, as usual. One reviewer says it's "worth every penny" without naming the penny count, and for a full club with a pool, fees are usually higher than a basic gym - so ask. And that steam-room outage is worth confirming is fixed if recovery amenities are why you'd join.

Who it's not for

Budget-minded lifters who just want a barbell and don't care about pools or saunas may be paying for amenities they won't use. Anyone who needs door-side parking should note the parking caveat. And if the pool is your main reason, confirm hours and lane availability first.

FAQ

What amenities does Commonwealth Sports Club have?

Reviews mention a salt-water swimming pool, sauna, steam room, hot tub, free towels and group classes, alongside the standard gym floor.

Is it crowded?

A 2015 member said there was "always room" and no waiting for machines. Newer reviews echo a spacious feel, though any club can vary by time of day.

How much does it cost?

No review lists a membership price. Since it's a full club with a pool, expect higher fees than a basic gym and confirm the rate directly.

Just joined this gym a few days ago so my daughter could swim, and I couldn't be happier. The gym is spacious, has great machines, and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Parking could be a bit closer and the steam room wasn't working, but those are minor issues. Overall, it's an excellent gym and I'm really glad we joined!

I absolutely love this gym! There is always room to do my routine, never packed to the point where I have to wait for any space/machines. The entire staff is incredibly friendly and helpful! I truly feel comfortable working out here. Not to mention the amenities are awesome. Towels, pool, hot tub, sauna. I am in the best shape of my life because of the classes I take and tips I received from the trainers. This place is worth every penny!
