Gold's Gym - Gym in Jacksonville, United States

Jacksonville, United States

The reviews here cluster around one theme, and it's not the equipment: it's what happens at the front desk. Day passes, guest rules, and contracts come up again and again, mostly angrily. If you're a Gold's member traveling through, or thinking of signing, read the billing complaints below before you commit anything.

This is the Gold's Gym in Jacksonville, North Carolina. It shows 3.2 from 129 ratings, which is a genuinely low score for a big-brand gym and a decent-sized sample, so the number means something. The newest written review is November 2019.

The Traveling-Member Problem

Two separate visitors ran into the same wall: their Gold's membership didn't get them in.

A visitor in October 2019, one star: "Spent a solid 5-10 minutes for them to verify my Gold's Gym membership since I'm in town for work. He couldn't find the right number to call so he told me I could still work out, I'd just have to pay. A shame that I get visits to other locations with my membership and I get charged to work out."

A visitor in May 2019, one star: "Applied for free pass. And was denied because I was visiting. Terms and conditions didn't mention anything about that stipulation."

Here's the mechanism worth understanding, because it turns a "they ripped me off" story into something you can plan around. Gold's Gym locations are largely independently owned franchises, not one company. Reciprocal access between locations isn't automatic; it depends on your home gym's membership tier and whether the two franchises honor each other. So a front-desk person genuinely may not be able to verify an out-of-town membership, and a "free pass" often excludes existing members of the same brand precisely to stop exactly this.

That doesn't make the frustration unreasonable. But it moves the question from "why won't they let me in" to "what does my specific membership actually include, and did I confirm reciprocity before showing up?" One phone call to your home gym settles it.

The Contract Complaint

A member in June 2019, one star: "Very shady business practices. Sign up for a month to month, find out they put me on a year contract. Sent in change of address and 2 months later I am told it didn't go through and have to pay for a gym membership that I have not been using. I would not recommend. If you do, read thoroughly everything you sign even if they tell you one thing, and make sure you keep a copy of your cancellation documentation."

His advice at the end is the most useful sentence on this whole page: read what you sign, and keep a copy of your cancellation paperwork. Gym contract disputes almost always come down to what's on the signed form versus what was said at the desk, and the member who keeps the paperwork wins. Whether the year term was a bait-and-switch or a misunderstanding of the form, I can't tell from one account, so I'll leave it as what it is: a serious complaint from one member, with a concrete lesson attached.

The Equipment Is Actually Fine

Buried under the billing anger, the equipment gets consistent, almost grudging praise.

A visitor in November 2019, two stars: "Equipment is good. Squat and Ground bars are bent. Not worth $15 dollar day trial. Bathroom needs cleaning and maintenance. Wipes/spray for equipment is not located where it is utilized, which explains the smell."

Read that carefully, because it's the most useful review here. "Equipment is good" and "squat and ground bars are bent" in the same breath. Bent barbells are a specific, checkable maintenance failure, not a vibe. And the point about cleaning wipes being in the wrong place "explaining the smell" is a sharp observation: it's not that they have no wipes, it's that nobody uses them because they're inconvenient. That's a fixable process problem, and it tells you more about management than the equipment does.

He also gives you the day-pass price: $15. That's the only firm number on the page.

The Staff Complaint I Won't Repeat In Full

One 2019 reviewer names the owner and staff in personal, unflattering terms while also conceding the equipment is nice and pointing to cheaper local alternatives with pools and childcare. I'll pass on the useful part and skip the personal attack: at least one member felt the guest policy was too strict (no guests allowed) and believed other Jacksonville gyms offered better value with more amenities. That's a comparison worth checking yourself, not a character verdict I can stand behind on one voice.

What The 3.2 From 129 Tells You

A 3.2 across 129 ratings is a real, sustained signal, not a bad week. For a national brand, that's low, and the written reviews explain why: the equipment is fine, but the front-desk experience, billing, day passes, guest rules, contracts, is where people got burned. If you never touch the desk after joining, you may be happy. The friction is at the edges: joining, canceling, visiting, bringing a guest.

What's Missing

No current information; the written record stops in 2019.

No membership pricing beyond the $15 day pass.

Who It's Not For

Traveling Gold's members who assume reciprocal access. Confirm with your home gym first.

Anyone who won't keep their own copy of contract and cancellation paperwork.

Who It Might Suit

Someone local who wants a solid equipment floor and will deal with the front desk exactly once. The machines get praise; the admin does not.

Owner Danny is a dbag. He makes you feel uncomfortable. Nice equipment, but really terrible people other than Will. I wont ever reccomend this gym location. PLUS YOU CANT HAVE A GUEST. why spend tons of money when you cant even have a guest come in? Child care option is nice but why not just go to onslow or courts? They have pools AND child care AND are so much cheaper. Just a food for thought.

Very shady business practices. Sign up for a month to month find out they put me on a year contract. Sent in change of address and 2 months later I am told it didn't go through and have to pay for a gym membership that I have not been using. I would not recommend this golds. If you do read thoroughly everything you sign even if they tell you one thing and make sure you keep a copy of your cancelation documentation.

Applied for free pass. And was denied because I was visiting. Terms and conditions didn't mention anything about that stipulation. I would have bought a week pass but left my wallet because I was in a rush and had the free pass. Definitely will not be using a golds gym while traveling
