Ylitornion Kuntotalo

Finland

One reviewer who came by in October 2020 summed up the appeal in a single line: "6 euros for the gym and swimming." That's the number worth leading with, because almost nothing else here is priced in public. This is a municipal Kuntotalo, a community sports building run by the town of Ylitornio, not a private gym. The weights room shares a roof with an indoor swimming pool, and the same low entry covers both.

What people actually say about it

The written reviews skew warm, and they agree on a few concrete things. The gym has "everything you need and more," according to a member writing in October 2025, who also called it "still in good shape." A visitor in January 2024 wrote, in Finnish, "Affordable exercise place, right after 12 it's peaceful, lots of exercise machines" (translated from Finnish). So there's a rough peak-hours map buried in the reviews: go after noon if you want the machines to yourself.

The pool draws its own praise. Two separate people mention swimming almost alone, and one passing traveler in March 2026 called it a "really nice and clean swimming pool." I'd read that as the building's real draw for out-of-towners, not the free weights.

What the average is really telling you

Here's the honest part. Every review printed here is five stars, yet the overall score sits at 4.3 across 55 ratings. That gap matters. It means a chunk of the 55 people who tapped a star never wrote a word, and their quieter three- and four-star taps are dragging the number down from the glowing text you can actually read. The words oversell; the aggregate corrects them. Neither is lying.

One small honesty flag from that 2020 review: the writer loved the massage chairs, then added an update that the chairs had been removed. If you're picturing a spa add-on, don't. It's gone.

What's missing

No review states current opening hours, and the Places record doesn't list any either, so plan your visit around a phone call. The 6-euro figure is from a 2020 review and may have moved since. There's no mention of lockers beyond "clean changing rooms," no class schedule, and no confirmation of what machines are actually on the floor. For a municipal building, the town website and a quick call to +358 40 5181539 will tell you more in two minutes than I can responsibly guess at here.

Who it's not for

If you want a chain-style fitness club with 24/7 access, personal trainers, and a printed class timetable, this isn't that. It's a small-town public leisure center where the gym is one room among several. If you want cheap lap swimming and a no-frills weights floor in the same trip, the price alone makes it hard to beat.

FAQ

Is Ylitornion Kuntotalo a gym or a swimming pool?

Both. It's a municipal community sports building with a weights room and an indoor pool, and reviewers say one low entry fee covers access to both.

How much does it cost?

A 2020 review quotes "6 euros for the gym and swimming." No newer review confirms the current price, so treat that as a starting point and call to verify.

When is it quietest?

A Finnish-language review says it's peaceful right after noon on weekdays, with plenty of machines free.

Edullinen kuntoilu paikka, heti klo 12 jälkeen on rauhallista, paljon kuntolaitteita.

Great place. 6€ for the gym and swimming. Although there is a free indoor swimming pool on the Swedish side, Ylitornio is better: cleaner, in better condition. On the Swedish side, immigrants, for example, swim in black dresses. My favorite is the massage chair, really good and relaxing. Parking right next to the door, clean changing rooms, sunlight, fresh air inside and few people :) Update: chairs have been removed I'll add pictures

It's great that such a place can be found in such a small town, a community center that certainly serves people of all ages. Every municipality should have these.
