Springfield, United States

A member of 20 years says the showers had mold and slime on the floors and walls. That's a health complaint, so it goes first.

Village Fitness is at 2728 Pheasant St in Springfield, Oregon. It shows 4.0 from 33 reviews, and nothing has been written since November 2019, nearly seven years ago.

The One-Star, and Why It's Different

A member in September 2019: "My family has been coming to this gym for over 20 years. When the club sold in 2018 it started to really go down hill fast. The shower areas are filthy and have mold and slime on the floors and walls. The equipment is constantly broken and the pool area is over run by kids that have no guidance and use the therapy pool as a bath tub. It's sad to watch this once owned beautiful club going downhill to a dirty place."

Twenty years. She isn't a disgruntled visitor, she's someone who watched a place she loved change hands, and she dates the change precisely: the club sold in 2018.

Mold and slime in wet areas is a real health issue, not a preference. I haven't seen it and I can't verify it, so that's her account, from September 2019. But she gives you a mechanism and a date, which is what separates a useful complaint from a grumble.

The Contradiction I Can't Fully Resolve

Here's the problem. Two members wrote glowing reviews in June 2019, and one more in November 2019, all after the 2018 sale she blames.

A member in June 2019: "This place is awesome. Amazing staff that are very friendly. I one hundred percent recommend this gym. Unbeatable price, amazing amenities, and a cold pint after a workout."

A member in November 2019: "Great place especially the pool and hot tub."

So one long-timer says the place fell apart after the sale, and three others in the same year say it's great. Both accounts are from the same period.

My hypothesis, and I'm labelling it clearly: she's comparing against twenty years of memory, and they're not. A club can be decent by the standards of a newcomer and visibly degraded to someone who knew it before. That would let all four of them be telling the truth. But I can't confirm it, and I'm not ranking her word above theirs or theirs above hers.

Somebody Listed the Whole Place

A member in June 2019: "Excellent health club, has it all: 2 outdoor lanes for swimming, tub and pool for kids, bikes, screens, bar, hot tub in the ladies room and small weight room in there also. Nice clean showers. Nice staff. TV and couches!"

Two outdoor swim lanes, a kids' pool, a bar, a hot tub in the ladies' room, and a small weight room in there too. That's the only real inventory on this page, and note she says "small weight room." If lifting is your priority, that word is the warning.

She also says "nice clean showers," in June 2019, three months before the mold review. I can't reconcile those two either.

The Complaint I Can Verify Myself

A member in November 2019, four stars: "The facilities are awesome. Their online presence is awful, though. No website with useful information. Social media accounts all have inactive links."

I can check this one, and she's right. Seven years later, this listing still has no website and no phone number at all.

That's the thing about a complaint you can test: it either holds up or it doesn't. Hers holds up. Whether it's still the same business is another question entirely.

Who It's Not For

Anyone who can't verify it's open. No phone, no website, nothing written since November 2019.

Anyone whose main goal is lifting. The weight room is described as small, once, and it's inside the ladies' changing area by that account.

Anyone put off by the September 2019 hygiene report, unless you're prepared to go and look at the showers yourself.

FAQ

Is there a pool?

Yes. Two outdoor swimming lanes plus a separate pool for children, according to a member writing in June 2019. Another mentions a therapy pool.

What's the weight room like?

One member calls it small. Nobody else describes it.

Should I worry about cleanliness?

A 20-year member reported mold and slime in the showers in September 2019. Another member called the showers clean in June 2019. I can't reconcile the two, and both are old.

Do they have a website?

No. A member complained about that in November 2019, and the listing still has no website or phone number, so her complaint stands.
