Crossfit Takanini - Gym in Papakura, New Zealand

Papakura, New Zealand

CrossFit Takanini shows a perfect 5.0 from 27 reviews, and the five written ones are unusually specific about why - not generic praise, but small, concrete stories about the owners going out of their way for people who'd just walked in the door.

A Stranger's First Day

Callum Rough's review, from June 2019, is the standout. He'd just landed in Auckland: "I had just arrived in Auckland and dropped of my bags and went to this gym. The owner's were so kind and hospitable to me. Alice (One of the owners) insisted on organising a lift home for me, so I wouldn't have to walk back in the dark." He adds that he didn't even take a CrossFit class that visit - he watched a few and describes the gym as having "ample space for everyone" - and still left with a ride home arranged by the owner.

That's not the kind of detail people invent to pad a five-star review. Organizing a lift home for someone who isn't yet a member, on their first visit, is a specific and costly thing to do, and it's the strongest single fact on this page.

Family-Run, and It Shows

Alisha Hope, January 2018, describes a gym built around more than just training: "its child friendly with a room for the kids with amazing kiwi family running the facility," and mentions a smoothie bar for after workouts. Carolyn Chapman, February 2019, calls it "an awesome family friendly crossfit box" with "great support from Alice, Mark & the team of coaches to push yourself to achieve personal goals." Naming the owners twice, across two independent reviews eight months apart, for the same kind of support, is worth noting - it's consistent praise, not a one-off compliment.

Two People Who'd Never Done This Before

Mateusz Kadlubowski, May 2018, and a reviewer posting as "No One," January 2022, both describe arriving with real anxiety about their fitness level, four years apart. Kadlubowski: "I was worried that I wouldn't be able to even have any good start. I was wrong to think that way, totally! The atmosphere here is great, coaches are fantastic and the WOD is different everyday and is challenging!" The 2022 reviewer: "I was really nervous because I hadn't done any fitness in so long. Not only are the staff really nice and understanding but the people there are so encouraging and supportive, I didn't feel like a failure!"

That reviewer also mentions the gym is "30mins away from my house," and that she's choosing to make that drive anyway because, compared to other CrossFit gyms she's seen, "it's worth it." That's a real cost being weighed, not a throwaway line - thirty minutes each way is a genuine trade-off, and she's making it deliberately.

What the Record Doesn't Cover

All five written reviews are positive, and none of them describes a complaint, a billing issue, or a piece of broken equipment. I'd take that as a good sign rather than a red flag, but five reviews is still five reviews out of 27 total ratings, and the newest of them is from January 2022 - over four years old at this point. Nothing on record confirms the gym is running the same way today, under the same ownership, with the same coaches.

What's Missing

No review states a membership price or a drop-in rate. No review mentions the gym's opening hours. Nobody describes the physical space in detail beyond "ample space for everyone" and a kids' room.

Who It's Not For

Anyone who needs current information: the most recent written review is more than four years old. Anyone hunting for a critical or mixed take - there isn't one in the written record here, which is worth knowing before you treat 5.0 as a guarantee.

My first time, invited by a new friend of mine! I was really nervous because I hadn't done any fitness in so long. Not only are the staff really nice and understanding but the people there are so encouraging and supportive, I didn't feel like a failure ! They let me go at my own pace and even though I was the slowest by miles, my whole body is already aching from my first session. I'm looking forward to going again, it's 30mins away from my house but from what I can see, compared to other CrossFit gyms, it's worth it

Brilliant gym full of friendly kind people and great equipment. I had just arrived in Auckland and dropped of my bags and went to this gym. The owner's were so kind and hospitable to me. Alice (One of the owners) insisted on organising a lift home for me, so I wouldn't have to walk back in the dark. Multiple people came up to me and greeted me during my time at the gym, and everyone was super friendly. The gym had all the equipment I could have needed. I didn't partake in any of the CrossFit classes but I saw a few, they looked like a lot of fun, the gym had ample space for everyone. The gym had a great atmosphere and the owners went above and beyond to ensure I had a pleasant experience.

When I came here, it was just a "give it a try" to myself, since I am not even fit. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to even have any good start. I was wrong to think that way, totally! The atmosphere here is great, coaches are fantastic and the WOD is different everyday and is challenging! Also as far I have seen (attending 3 times per week for a month already) you can start here at any level, regardless of how your current condition is. :)
