Hd Fitness - Gym in Hoffman Estates, United States

Hoffman Estates, United States

HD Fitness in Hoffman Estates carries a 4.8 from 21 ratings, and its whole story runs through one trainer, Mike. This is a personal-training gym, not an open-access floor. I'm going to lead with the harshest review, because it's the most useful thing on this page and it comes with a lesson worth more than any star count.

Start with the accountability review

In June 2026, a parent left one star and a detailed account. Their daughter is training for West Point and needs to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment. The goal was specific: "2 or 3 pull-ups, 30 to 40 pushups, 60 to 70 sit-ups." After "9 costly months of going to this gym 2 to 4 times per week, she couldn't do any of it. To my dismay, she couldn't do a single pull-up." The bill topped "$2k." Here's the part I respect: the reviewer blamed themselves too - "Shame on me for not setting incremental goals for her and assessing achievement every month, but isn't that what a personal trainer does?"

That question is the whole point. Personal-training results depend on measurable checkpoints, and when nobody sets monthly benchmarks, months can pass with no proof of progress until it's too late. The reviewer even said, "Mike is a really good guy and my Daughter and I both like him." So this isn't a character attack - it's a program-design and goal-tracking failure. The takeaway for you isn't "avoid this place." It's: before you pay for a months-long package anywhere, agree in writing on monthly targets and a way to measure them. Shift the question from "how could they" to "what did we actually agree to track."

The other side of the ledger

The five-star reviews are real too, and they describe the same trainer warmly. A December 2019 client wrote, "I saw better results in 1-2 months working out here with Mike" than years of solo training, and named a second coach, Jackie. A February 2026 parent said their son "goes there for off-season baseball workouts and Mike is great! He's awesome with the kids." So the strong reviews cluster around general fitness and youth athletic conditioning - not around passing a specific, pass-or-fail standardized test on a deadline.

What that 4.8 measures

Twenty-one ratings is a small pool. One thoughtful one-star - which is exactly what June 2026 delivered - barely dents a 4.8 mathematically, yet it may be the most informative review here. Read the split by goal, not by star: happy general-fitness and youth-sports clients, one unhappy test-prep parent. If your goal is measurable and time-bound, that pattern matters. The reviewer also flagged "very restrictive" hours "with some kid often covering for the trainer," which is worth confirming against the unusual split hours in the listing.

What's missing

No review lists a per-session or package price beyond the "over $2k" one parent spent across nine months. The listed hours are irregular, with early-morning and late-afternoon blocks on different days, so verify them. Nobody describes open-gym access, which suggests this is coaching-only. Who it's not for

If you need to hit a specific fitness standard by a fixed date, don't assume general coaching gets you there - demand a benchmarked plan first. If you want friendly, motivating general conditioning or youth athletic work, the reviews are broadly positive.

FAQ

Is HD Fitness a gym or personal training?

It's a personal-training gym centered on a trainer named Mike, with a second coach named Jackie mentioned. Expect coached sessions rather than open-gym access.

What's the main complaint?

A 2026 parent reported no measurable progress over nine months and roughly $2,000 spent while prepping their daughter for a specific fitness test, faulting the lack of incremental goal-setting.

Is it good for kids and general fitness?

Reviews say yes. Parents praise youth and off-season sports conditioning, and clients report faster general results than training alone.

How should I protect myself before paying?

Agree on monthly, measurable targets and a check-in schedule before committing to any long package, and confirm current pricing and hours by phone.

Mike is the real deal. HD Fitness is a fantastic gym, no matter where you are at physically. Not only do my daughter and I get a good workout, but we get understanding and coaching around the workout. My daughter's self-esteem has risen because of the confidence and challenges Mike has given, and she's taking care of herself. Mike's experience and knowledge shows in the workouts he provides, and I have benefited greatly. Go check HD out...you won't regret it.

I joined HD Fitness 3 months ago. Over the years I've worked out by myself, but I saw better results in 1-2 months working out here with Mike. ( much stronger ). Both coach Mike and Jackie are awesome ! They push you and work with you to achieve your personal goals. I love the environment as well as the people who work out there too . As a result, I have started my kids at HD fitness as well. Keep up the great work Mike ! 👍🏻

Mike gets lots of great reviews, and he is a really good guy. However, my experience was pretty bad. My daughter wants to attend West Point and must pass their Candidate Fitness Assessment. I made it very clear the goal was to do 2 or 3 pull-ups, 30 to 40 pushups, 60 to 70 sit-ups, etc. Was assured these goals would be exceeded. After 9 costly months of going to this gym 2 to 4 times per week, she couldn't do any of it. To my dismay, she couldn't do a single pull-up. My research has shown an unassisted pull-up after 4 to 6 weeks isn't unreasonable. Zero success after 9 months and didn't get feedback along the way that zero progress was being made. Shame on me for not setting incremental goals for her and assessing achievement every month, but isn't that what a personal trainer does? So over $2k spent, no return and a very expensive lesson learned. If this kind of all around, core strength is the goal, not your place. Not to mention their hours are very restrictive with some kid often covering for the trainer. Incredibly disappointing. Again, I will say that Mike is a really good guy and my Daughter and I both like him. My issue is the program she was on was completely ineffective.
