With 1,087 reviews, The Gym Group Peterborough has a rating built on real numbers, so the 4.4 means something here that it wouldn't at a place with 30 reviews. And the single most detailed review is a one-star about hygiene, which is exactly where I'd start if you're deciding whether to join.

Read the cleanliness complaint first

An October 2024 reviewer used the gym only for workouts until the day they needed the changing room, and it landed hard: "the moment I walked into the changing rooms it was so so disgusting. No cleaner at night. Floors dirty. Showers are filthy. One shower wall is broken... The walls have damp. The taps have so much lime scale... So many members and they can't maintain the cleanliness of this gym. Please avoid this gym."

Here's the mechanism worth understanding, because it reframes the anger. This is a budget, high-volume, near-24-hour gym (the listing shows midnight-to-midnight hours). That model runs on low staffing and overnight self-service, which usually means cleaning happens on a schedule with gaps, not continuously, and a broken fixture can sit for a while before a regional maintenance visit. That doesn't make the reviewer wrong to be disgusted. Filthy showers are filthy showers. But it shifts the question from "how could they" to "what am I paying for at this price point." A cheap 24-hour gym trades staffed polish for access and cost. If pristine changing rooms are non-negotiable for you, this format is a poor match, and the low price is telling you so.

Where the other voices land

The rest of the recent written reviews are warm, and they cluster on staff and coaching, not facilities. "The place is very clean and staff are friendly," wrote a member in April 2026, directly contradicting the October 2024 review, which tells you cleanliness may vary by day, shift, or which room you're in. A June 2026 review praised a "kickstart session" that built confidence on the weight machines. Another April 2026 review thanked a staff member for help setting up a movement on the Smith machine. So the staff and free intro sessions get repeat praise, while the changing rooms get the complaint.

What the 4.4 actually measures

This is the part where the big number earns its keep. A 4.4 across 1,087 reviews is honest and stable. One angry reviewer can't move it. What it tells you is a genuinely mixed picture: most members are satisfied enough to give four or five stars, a meaningful minority are not, and the written reviews suggest the split runs along facilities-versus-staff lines. The equipment gets called plentiful and the staff friendly, again and again. The cleaning is where it wobbles. That's a very typical profile for a budget chain gym, and the 4.4 captures it fairly.

What's missing

No review states the monthly price, which is almost funny for a value gym where price is the whole pitch. Check thegymgroup.com for the current Peterborough rate. Contract terms don't appear either, so if you dislike commitments, confirm whether it's rolling monthly before signing. The listing shows a phone number, +44 300 303 4800, and the site. One reviewer did mention "good parking" and a bus stop "at walking distance," which is a small but real logistics win.

Who it's not for

If you need consistently spotless showers and changing rooms, the recurring hygiene complaint is your flag. If you want boutique coaching and small classes, a big-box value gym isn't that. And if you train at odd hours expecting staff on hand, remember the model leans on self-service overnight.

FAQ

How clean is the Peterborough gym?

It's disputed. An October 2024 review called the changing rooms "disgusting" with "no cleaner at night," while an April 2026 review said "the place is very clean." As a budget near-24-hour gym, cleaning runs on a schedule with gaps, so experiences vary by time and area.

What does membership cost?

No review states a price. Check thegymgroup.com for the current Peterborough rate and whether it's a rolling monthly plan.

Is it open 24 hours?

The listing shows midnight-to-midnight hours. Confirm exact staffed and access hours on the official site before relying on late-night entry.

Is the equipment good?

Multiple reviewers describe plenty of equipment and helpful staff, including free intro and "kickstart" sessions on the machines.

Is parking available?

One member noted "good parking" and a bus stop within walking distance.

If I could leave less than one star I would. This has to be the worst gym in Peterborough and the dirtiest. I have only used this gym for a work out. Never used the washrooms but today I had to use the lockers and the moment I walked into the changing rooms it was so so disgusting. No cleaner at night. Floors dirty. Showers are filthy. One shower wall is broken and they have just kept it inside. The walls have damp. The taps have so much lime scale. Mirrors are filthy. So many members and they can’t maintain the cleanliness of this gym. Please avoid this gym.
