David Lloyd Colchester

Colchester, United Kingdom

David Lloyd Colchester carries a 4.6 across 943 reviews, which is a strong number for a health and racquets club. But before you read that as a verdict on training, look at what the newest reviews are actually about. Nearly every recent five-star note describes the sign-up experience and names a salesperson. That's a specific thing to measure, and it isn't the same as measuring the workout. Let me unpack it.

What the fresh reviews are really praising

A February 2026 member wrote: "from the moment I made my initial web enquiry to what is now my 4th week of membership, I can't stress how great the whole experience has been," then spent most of the review praising the sales tour, ending "David Lloyd isn't just a gym membership, it's a lifestyle choice." Another February 2026 note: "the whole process of signing up to David Lloyd has been completely smooth sailing." A June 2026 review focuses entirely on one staff member being "friendly, professional, and helpful."

Notice the pattern. These are enthusiastic, but they're onboarding reviews written in the first few weeks, at the exact point a new member is happiest and the sales team is still attentive. That's not a trick, it's just gravity. A great tour is a real thing to value. It tells you very little about month fourteen, when the tour is a memory and you're paying the direct debit. The more useful number would be the reviews from long-term members, and those aren't the ones surfacing here.

What it actually is

This isn't a lifting box. One February 2026 review lays out the real offering: "the spa is lovely for me to relax in and as a family we're regularly playing tennis and padel together. I really like that you can loan the equipment at no further cost whenever you book a court. The kids are now also enjoying tennis lessons." That's the product, racquets, spa, family facilities, tennis and padel courts, with a gym attached. You're buying a club, not a gym membership. Price it against that.

Where the voices agree

Across the reviews, two themes repeat independently: helpful reception staff and a genuinely nice spa. A June 2026 visitor who came just for the spa said "enjoyed the gym, well equipped and although busy still easy to use equipment. People here are friendly and the spa was lovely as always." When several people separately land on the same details, spa and staff, that's a real signal you can lean on more than any single glowing tour review.

What this average measures

A 4.6 across 943 reviews is a big, honest sample, and it won't swing on one bad day. But an average this size at a multi-facility club blends spa-goers, tennis players, families and gym users into one figure. A lovely spa afternoon and a crowded gym session feed the same score. And the freshest reviews skew hard toward sign-up joy, which inflates the recent picture. Read the number as "people are happy to join and the facilities are broad," not as "the gym floor is elite."

What's missing

Here's the real gap: not one review states a price. This is a premium club, "Platinum Membership" gets named, "100% worth the money" gets said, but no actual figure appears anywhere. For a place where cost is the single biggest decision factor, that silence is loud. Nobody lists joining fees, monthly rates, or what Platinum includes versus a lower tier. The reviews also don't cover peak-time crowding on the gym floor in any detail. The listing shows hours of roughly 6am to 10pm on weekdays, but confirm current pricing directly with the club.

Who it's not for

Budget-focused lifters who just want a barbell and a squat rack will overpay badly here, you'd be funding a spa, courts and family facilities you won't touch. If you want a family club with racquet sports, a spa and a gym under one membership, this is built for exactly that.

I recently joined with my two children and we've found it great, the spa is lovely for me to relax in and as a family we're regularly playing tennis and padel together. I really like that you can loan the equipment at no further cost whenever you book a court. The kids are now also enjoying tennis lessons. Nathan did a great job showing us round and arranging our memberships despite it being a last minute request on a fully booked day. All the staff I've asked for help from at reception have been super helpful, I've been really impressed.

From the moment I made my initial web enquiry to what is now my 4th week of membership, I can't stress how great the whole experience has been. Firstly i have to say that Jodie in the sales team who was our first point of contact, set the bar very high in terms of professionalism and explained thoroughly what packages were involved, and then invited us in for a tour. The tour was excellent and Jodie took the time to show us all facilities available, and probably around a third of the way through the tour, we were putty in her hands and ready to sign up for Platinum Membership. I have to say I never thought i'd love it as much as i do, as i've always been a bit lazy when it comes to exercise, but David Lloyd isn't just a gym membership, it's a lifestyle choice. Hats off to you all, and keep up the excellent work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is David Lloyd Colchester a gym or a club?

A club. Reviews describe tennis, padel, a spa, family facilities and equipment loans alongside the gym. You're buying broad access, not a standalone gym membership.

Why do the newest reviews focus on sign-up?

The freshest five-star reviews are written in members' first weeks and praise the sales tour and staff by name. They reflect the onboarding experience, not long-term membership. Weigh them accordingly.

How much does membership cost?

No review states a price, despite naming "Platinum Membership" and calling it worth the money. Contact the club directly for current joining fees and monthly rates.
