McVeigh Sports & Fitness Center

McVeigh Sports and Fitness Center is on Liggett Avenue at Fort Lewis, part of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. The Places record carries a closure flag, and nothing has been written since September 2019.

Two things before anything else. You need base access: this is on an active installation, and there's no public membership. And I can't tell you whether it's actually shut. The record holds both a temporary-closure status and a permanent-closure flag, which contradict each other. Check jblm.armymwr.com or call +1 253-967-5869.

What It Was, In One Review

A member in August 2019 wrote the only inventory anyone gives: "Probably my favorite gym on base, good staff, very convenient, close to the office and it has Kimbro pool in it. Which has a wading pool for the kiddos, but it has been out of commission for a while. It also has a sauna, CrossFit room, rock wall room, tennis (outdoor) and racquetball courts, free fitness classes, and the best part, it's all free to DoD ID cardholders. I still remember when it was called the EWTC."

A pool, a wading pool that was already broken, a sauna, a CrossFit room, a rock wall, tennis and racquetball courts, and free classes. All free to anyone with a DoD ID.

He also gives the old name: the EWTC, the Exercise, Weight and Tennis Center. So this place has been renamed at least once already.

The 24-Hour Detail

A member in September 2019: "24 hour access is amazing. Must register during the week between whoever is theirs lunch time and break time. Please don't upset these people."

Round-the-clock access, but you have to register in person during the week, and only when staff are available around their own breaks.

That's a procedural hurdle worth knowing about: the access isn't automatic, and the window to arrange it is narrow. His "please don't upset these people" is a joke with a point in it.

He's also blunt about the downside: "I just wish it came with an odor detector to stop stank from entering."

The Review That Isn't Serious

There's a four-star from August 2019 that reads as an extended joke: a member displaced by an eight-week refurbishment at Wilson Gym, describing himself and 25 others arriving "in a cattle truck," being spat at, and the locals speaking "a McVeigh language."

It's satire about gym overcrowding, not an account of anything that happened. I'm mentioning it so you don't read it literally if you see it, and because the fact underneath is real: Wilson Gym was closed for renovations for about eight weeks in 2019, and McVeigh absorbed the overflow. That's the only crowding signal on the record.

The Rest

A member in July 2019, four stars: "Nice gym, lots of equipment, has a CrossFit room as well."

A member in July 2019, four stars: "Staff is very knowledgeable about equipment and extremely safety conscious."

24 hour access is amazing. Must register during the week between who ever is theirs lunch time and break time. Please don't upset these people. But this gym has everything you need. Chest, biceps, triceps, back and some legs. I just wish it came with an odor detector to stop stank from entering. But best gym I've ever been to in the military. All one of them

As of July 1st, 2019 I really like the gym. However, as I had to move from Wilson Gym on North Fort I feel like a Syrian refugee. The gym is packed because of the rennovations on Wilson going on for a solid 8 weeks. I get weird looks and obviously the natives know I dont belong. They spit at me and speak in a McVeigh language unknown to tye Wilson outsiders. We beg and pleed for a bench or a rack but to no avail. We arrived to the gym all 25 of us in a cattle truck. My kid who can barely bench 125 has to be held for the entirity of the ride. We are humble to be there, no doubt, but as we move forward we can only pray to Arnold that he gives us the lifts we need, not the one's we ask for. God bless you fellow lifters and may you bench minimum 2 plates each side, Amen
