Powerhouse Gym - Gym in New York, United States

New York, United States

Powerhouse Gym on West 27th Street in Manhattan carries a 4.9 across 380 reviews, and the recent ones read like love letters from traveling lifters. Before you take that at face value, let me tell you what kind of 4.9 this is, because the sample has a distinct shape.

Read who's writing these reviews

Look at who shows up. A June 2026 reviewer opened with "Came here for a day pass for my first time in NYC." An April 2026 one: "Highly recommend when visiting NYC or if you live here." A June 2026 note: "Visited New York and bought a week pass here." A May 2026 review: "Decided to check out this gym today before my day out in the city." See the pattern? A large share of these are day-pass and week-pass visitors - serious gym-goers on a trip who chose to spend a workout here on purpose. That's a self-selecting crowd. People who research a bodybuilding gym before flying in, then pay per visit, are primed to be happy. It doesn't make the 4.9 fake. It makes it the verdict of enthusiasts, not the average local grinding through a January membership.

What they consistently praise

Two things come up again and again, and they're concrete enough to trust. First, the equipment. A February 2026 review named it: "The Hammer Strength equipment is second to none." Another from December 2025 called them "real deal weightlifting machines," and a May 2026 lifter singled out "the pit for my deadlifting was beautiful." When multiple independent reviewers name Hammer Strength and a deadlift pit, that's a real signal about what this floor is built for - heavy, free-weight and plate-loaded training, not a circuit-machine chain.

Second, the staff. Warm front-desk service shows up repeatedly, and yes, one name recurs with praise, which is fair game. The vibe reviewers describe is a tight bodybuilding community where "friendly gym goers... are always open to share training knowledge" (December 2025).

What the day pass actually includes

There's a genuinely useful detail buried in a June 2026 review: "day pass includes all the amenities including tanning and red light therapy!" That's specific and worth confirming at the desk. Another reviewer notes 24-hour access, which matches the listing's around-the-clock hours field. If you're a visitor pricing out a workout in Manhattan, an all-amenities day pass is a real proposition.

What's missing

No review states a dollar figure. Not the day-pass price, not the week-pass price, not a membership rate. For a gym whose reviews are dominated by pass-buying visitors, that's a notable gap - everyone loves the value, nobody prints the number. The listing gives a phone line, +1 646-429-9278, and a website, powerhousegymnyc.com. That's your move before you go: confirm the day-pass cost and exactly which amenities it covers.

Who it's not for

It's not for someone who wants light cardio and a quiet corner - this is a bodybuilding-leaning, free-weight and Hammer Strength floor, and the community is described as "super fit." If crowded, high-energy lifting spaces aren't your thing, look elsewhere. And if you need a firm price before committing, you'll have to call, because the reviews won't give it to you.

FAQ

What kind of gym is Powerhouse Gym NYC?

A bodybuilding-oriented, free-weight and machine gym. Reviewers repeatedly praise Hammer Strength equipment and a dedicated deadlift pit, and describe a fit, knowledge-sharing community.

Can I use it as a visitor?

Yes. Many reviews come from travelers buying day or week passes. One June 2026 reviewer said the day pass "includes all the amenities including tanning and red light therapy." Confirm current pass options at +1 646-429-9278.

Why is the 4.9 rating so high?

A large share of reviews come from day-pass and week-pass visitors who chose this gym deliberately - a self-selecting, enthusiast crowd. The equipment praise is specific and credible, but the rating reflects motivated visitors more than the average long-term local.

How much does it cost?

No review states a price for a day pass, week pass, or membership. Call +1 646-429-9278 or check powerhousegymnyc.com to confirm current rates and what each pass includes.
