A member says she was charged two annual fees for a single year's membership. That's a billing claim with a number attached, so it goes near the top.
10 Star Fitness is at 2700 Reidville Rd in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It shows 4.5 from 284 reviews, which is a decent sample. But every written review here is from 2019, the newest in October, so what follows is nearly seven years old.
The Billing Complaint
A member in September 2019, one star: "This company has shady business practices. You'll get charged 2 annual fees if you only go there for a year. They pass you off to an agency to handle payments, etc. Plus the gym and classes are overcrowded, and the treadmills are rusty on the handles and some don't work."
Two things worth separating here.
The checkable part: two annual fees inside one year, payments handled by a third-party agency, rusty treadmill handles, some machines not working. Those are specific and testable. A double annual fee usually comes from a contract where the fee date and your join date don't line up, which is a defensible structure that catches people out honestly. Whether that's what happened here, I don't know. But "when exactly is the annual fee charged?" is now a question you'd be foolish not to ask.
The part I'm not adopting: "shady business practices." That's her characterisation, and it's the only negative voice on this record.
Note she and a five-star reviewer both mention crowding, though. He calls it "spacious," she calls it "overcrowded." Both could be true at different hours; that's my hypothesis, not a finding.
What the Positive Reviews Actually Contain
A member in October 2019: "I been coming here about 8 months and I highly recommend. It's spacious, people are considerate and respectful. The monthly and yearly price is unbelievable. Come see what you pay for weight training, treadmills, classes, trainers, saunas, child care."
He lists the facilities: weights, treadmills, classes, trainers, saunas, childcare. And "the price is unbelievable" with no figure, which tells you nothing you can use. Seven years on, it's worth less than nothing.
A member in July 2019: "The kidzone is AMAZING. My 2 year old daughter has never had a sitter and literally asks to go to the shim and cries when it's time to go home. Everything is clean and well kept, and there is a ton of equipment. I like that there is a private room for women only to work out in if I want. Prices are very reasonable."
A women-only room exists. She's the only person who mentions it, and for some readers that's the whole decision.
A member in August 2019: "Mamas with kiddos! I must bow down to the most awesome gym day care ever! We have two little girls 9 months and 4 y.o, I come here and I don't worry about my babies! We love Ms. Kathy, she is the best with babies!"
Two separate mothers, in July and August 2019, both lead with the childcare. Not the equipment. If you've ever skipped the gym because there was nobody to watch the kids, that's the signal here. They take babies as young as nine months, by her account.
Ms Kathy is named in praise, so I'm happy to repeat it. Whether she's still there after seven years is another matter.
The Three-Star That Isn't a Criticism
A member in August 2019: "This is a really good gym! Upbeat atmosphere and would definitely recommend to someone who prefers a bigger gym. Although, I am new to the Spartanburg area and much prefer a smaller family owned gym."
He gave three stars and the gym did nothing wrong. He just wanted something else. That's worth flagging because it's sitting in the average looking like criticism, and it isn't. It's a preference.
It also confirms the size question from a neutral party: this is a big gym.
What's Missing
No prices, despite three people calling them good. No opening hours published at all.
Nothing since October 2019.
Who It's Not For
Anyone who wants a small, family-run gym. Two reviewers independently tell you this isn't that.
Anyone who won't read the contract carefully, going by the September 2019 fee account.
