Gym Tonic - Gym in Los Angeles, United States

Los Angeles, United States

The most useful review here comes from someone who gave it three stars

Most of the five-star write-ups for this La Cienega gym read like a highlight reel. The one I trust most is the three-star from March 2026, because it praises and complains in the same breath. That member calls the place clean, well maintained, and stocked with a solid range of machines, then lists three gripes: air conditioning that seems to switch on at the last possible moment (uncomfortably warm during a heat wave), a turf area that opens and closes without a predictable schedule, and trainers who occupy several machines at once while working with clients. Their sharpest line is about value: "If we're spending $200 for a luxury gym, the facility should reflect that level of comfort."

That's the number worth holding onto. A separate five-star review from January 2026 frames the price differently, calling it "a better deal than Equinox" and noting there aren't many mid-tier gyms in the area. So you have two members who agree the pricing is premium and disagree on whether the comfort matches it. Neither is lying. They're weighting AC uptime against equipment quality and landing in different places.

What it actually is

This is a converted-warehouse strength and class gym in the Culver City area, rated 4.7 across 107 reviews. A May 2026 review describes the space as "bright and airy," with multiple squat racks, abundant dumbbells, two turf areas including a covered outdoor space, and Whole Foods next door for groceries on the way out. Amenities come up again and again: sauna, towel warmer, filtered water, a meditation room, stocked locker rooms. Classes get named specifically, mat Pilates and a Thursday-morning tai chi class taught by an instructor a long-time seeker of in-person tai chi says finally scratched the itch after six months.

Where the voices line up

Cleanliness and recent equipment upgrades show up in nearly every recent review. Two separate members mention new machines added lately. Staff friendliness at the front desk gets repeated praise. The disagreements are narrow and specific: temperature control and machine availability during peak hours. That's a good sign. When the complaints are this precise, the average is usually honest.

What's missing

No review states an exact monthly rate. The "$200" figure comes from one member's aside, not a posted price, so treat it as a ballpark, not a quote. Peak-hour crowding is hinted at ("I could see them filling up at busier times") but no one maps the actual rush. If AC comfort matters to you, call and ask how they handle the turf-gate-versus-cooling tradeoff before you commit.

Who it's not for

If you train on a tight schedule and can't wait out a trainer holding three machines, the mid-tier premium here may frustrate you. If you want the cheapest option in the neighborhood, this isn't it.

Incredible gym - I love the converted warehouse space, which is bright and airy. The equipment is top of the line, abundant (multiple squat racks, dumbbell sets, etc), and well distributed across the space - they recently added a bunch more and the space is not overcrowded with equipment. There are two great turf areas, including a covered outdoor space that is really pleasant. The locker room is impeccable and the staff is very friendly. Also, Whole Foods is next door, which is very convenient for picking groceries up on the way out of the gym. It's a place apart in LA, highly recommend!

Tai chi class that is held on Thursday mornings in GymTonic is absolutely amazing. For years I have been trying to find in person place to learn Tai chi, and finally found it here. The instructor Jordan very patiently and with lots of detail and dedication explains every move and pose. I learned a lot since I started 6 months ago. After the class , students feel energized and calm. I would highly recommend this place.

I've been coming here for a little over a year and have nothing but positive things to say about this place! It's always so clean, they recently upgraded with some new equipment, the sauna and showers are great, and the staff is super friendly! Also, shoutout to Maddy for the best mat Pilates classes. I am a Culver City LA Fitness survivor (iykyk) and this is such a massive upgrade and a better deal than Equinox. Not a lot of mid-tier gyms price-wise in the area so highly recommend this place if you like a mix of classes, strength training, and cardio. I am loyal to GT forever now! ❤️

I was looking for a nice gym to stop into on my work trip to Culver City and I'm so so happy I did. Really pleased with the entire experience of GymTonic. Machines are brand new and are relevant machines that are sought after such as Hip Thrust, Hack Squats, etc. It was so clean and full of amenities - including a sauna, towel warmer, the best filtered water dispenser, meditation room. The locker rooms were equipped with toiletries and various feminine products. Overall I was impressed at the variety of equipment and amenities there - and it wasn't too busy and overwhelming when I went. I would definitely recommend this gym. Lastly the customer service was amazing. Grace at the front desk welcomed me with such warmth and kindness. Really appreciated that energy walking into a new gym. Thank you Grace ♥️

It's a good gym overall - clean, maintained, and equipped with a solid range of machines, but there are a few areas that could be improved. First, temperature control is an issue. It often feels like the air conditioning is only turned on at the last possible moment. During a recent heat wave, the gym became uncomfortably warm to the point of feeling lightheaded, yet the AC was not running. Even on typical days, the AC is frequently off. While this may be due to the turf section gate being open, it's difficult to justify given how much members pay. If we're spending $200 for a "luxury gym," the facility should reflect that level of comfort. Second, access to the turf area seems inconsistent. It appears to open and close without a clear or predictable schedule. If running the AC while the gate is open is a concern, it would be helpful to provide an alternative access solution rather than closing the space entirely, particularly since this area is heavily promoted. Lastly, some trainers tend to occupy multiple machines at once while working with clients. This can lead to longer wait times for others, which is challenging for members who are on a tighter schedule.
