Wildcard Gym - Gym in Los Angeles, United States

Los Angeles, United States

Here's the split I'd want you to see first: the worst review of Wildcard Gym isn't about the gym at all. A one-star from October 2025 is entirely about an online store order, four items bought through the website, a wrong hat shipped, no reply to emails, and phone numbers the reviewer says were out of service. That's an e-commerce complaint, not a training complaint, and it's worth keeping the two separate before you judge the place as a boxing gym.

Wildcard is the legendary boxing gym on Vine St in Hollywood, Freddie Roach's gym, rated 4.5 across 168 votes. It's a working fighters' room, not a commercial fitness center, and the reviews make more sense once you hold that in mind.

What it really is

The five-star reviews are consistent about the draw. A July 2025 visitor describes feeling welcomed and treated with patience and respect, getting a photo and a chat about boxing with Freddie, whom they call humble and approachable, and adds a line I'd underline: they understood the constraints the gym puts on visitors, because people are there to train. A 2023 review recounts a parent getting their son coached by Roach and a former pro, calling everyone welcoming. A February 2026 five-star praises the energy and a coach named Eddy's pad sessions. So the coaching and the atmosphere are the product, and casual visitors are tolerated around serious training.

That framing matters. If you turn up expecting a polished membership gym with towel service, you'll misread the place. If you turn up understanding it's where professionals work, the welcome people describe makes sense.

The store problem, and the mechanism

Back to that October 2025 order complaint, because it's a genuine consumer warning even if it's off the gym floor. A boxing gym running a merch website is running two different operations, and the one shipping hats can be understaffed or outsourced while the training side hums along. Wrong item, dead support inbox, unanswered phone: that's an online-retail failure, and it says little about a coaching session. My honest read is to treat the store as a separate risk. If you want gear, consider buying in person rather than trusting the web order, at least until the support channel is confirmed working.

The management gripe

A two-star from March 2026 is a long personal grievance about the owner's wife and how the gym's culture has changed, claiming others feel the same but stay quiet. It names people and describes a shift in who runs the floor. It's a single voice on an interpersonal matter, so I won't repeat the names or treat the account as established fact. The fair summary: at least one long-time regular is unhappy about a management dynamic. Worth noting, not worth adopting.

What the average measures

At 168 votes, 4.5 is a strong number for a gym that openly limits what visitors can do. The words explain it: the star power and coaching pull the score up, while the store order and one management complaint pull it back. Nothing here reads as inflated.

What's missing

No review quotes a training rate, a visitor fee, or whether you can just drop in to train versus watch. Those are exactly the "constraints on visitors" one reviewer references without pricing. The website is wildcardboxing.com and the phone is +1 323-461-4170, though one reviewer reported trouble reaching the store line.

Who it's not for

Skip it if you want a comfortable commercial gym, guaranteed open-mat access as a tourist, or a reliable online store today. If you want to train, or learn, at a genuine piece of boxing history and you respect that fighters come first, this is the place.

Had a great Experience at the Wild Card Gym. I felt very welcomed and was treated with patience and respect when I first stepped in . As a lifelong boxing fan it was an honor to meet Freddie. He is so humble and approachable. Took a picture with him and talked Boxing with the legendary coach. The gym is gym and people are there to train so I understand the constraints they put on visitors. Had the opportunity to meet pacquaio but my experience with Freddie made my day.

Had the pleasure of hooking my son up with boxing royalty Freddie Roach and former pro 'Lucky Boy' Omotoso at the legendary Wildcard Boxing Gym in Hollywood. Two absolute class guys who took time out to coach him and offer him top advice. Also a shout out to all the other fighters and coaches at the gym who made us feel so welcome and made for an experience he'll never forget. So grateful to everyone there for making the kid's dream come true.

Been going to this gym for years. Great people, great atmosphere. Now that the owners wife has begun to assert herself around the gym it's not the same. Now that she's tasted a little bit of power, she wants everything done her way. It's no longer the house that Freddy built but the dungeon that Marie controls. I'm not a slave nor will I be silenced. There's freedom of speech in this country and I will always speak truth to power. Many others feel the same way but are afraid to speak up out of fear of being kicked out the gym by her. Not me, I will leave voluntarily before anyone tries to muzzle my right to speak up to whoever. Real life is bigger than boxing, this is Los Angeles, don't get it twisted.

This review is for a purchase made through their website. I ordered 4 items for my husband, including a green/gold hat exactly as advertised. What arrived was a completely different hat - sent without my permission. I emailed the order support address and got no response. I tried calling the number in the email and the gym's number, and both appear to be out of service. There is literally no way to get my money back or get this remedied. Extremely disappointing experience. Do not buy from their online store.
