Retro Fitness of Whippany

Hanover, United States

Two separate complaints at this Retro Fitness branch aren't really about rudeness - they're about how franchise memberships work, and it's worth understanding before you sign anything. A reviewer in May 2026 described her husband being stopped mid-workout and told to leave because "his manager told him this isn't his home gym." Here's the boring mechanism behind that: with many gym franchises, your membership is tied to a specific home location, and other branches can refuse or limit access. So when his own Retro closed and he drove 30 minutes to this one, the policy - not just one employee - is what turned him away. He's allowed to be furious. But the question shifts from "how could they" to "what does my membership actually let me use?" Ask that before you join a franchise.

The billing and offer trap

A January 2026 reviewer hit the other classic snag: a "1 MONTH FREE" sign-up offer, then a cancellation because she was moving, then a front-desk dispute over whether her membership was still valid. She'd even phoned ahead and been told, in her words, "your membership is valid until next 3 weeks." Free-month promos and cancellation windows are exactly where gym billing gets messy, because what a phone rep confirms and what the contract says don't always match. Get any "still valid" promise in writing. That's not cynicism - it's how I'd protect myself.

What it actually is and what the score measures

This is a franchise fitness center in Whippany, New Jersey, rated 4.5 from 358 reviews. That's a large sample, so the number means something - but read what it's made of. The written reviews split hard. Some are warm five-stars: a December 2025 member praised a HIIT kickboxing class and named a helpful instructor, and a November 2025 review called the place clean with a "nice mix of young and old crowd" and "no instagram shenanigans." Others are one-stars about front-desk treatment and aggressive follow-up calls. One reviewer in February 2026 signed up for a day pass and got "called 3 times in one day starting at 8 in the morning." With 358 votes, a 4.5 tells you most people are satisfied - and that a real minority left with a bad taste over service, not equipment.

What's missing

The reviews barely touch the actual gym floor. No membership price is stated. Nothing on equipment range, cleanliness of locker rooms, or how busy peak hours get. The loudest signals are about front-desk service and billing, which tells you where friction lives here - but leaves the training experience oddly undocumented.

Who it's not for

If you specifically want to float between multiple locations, confirm the home-gym rules first. And if aggressive sales follow-up ruins a gym for you, the day-pass phone-spam complaints are a fair warning.

FAQ

Is my membership usable at other Retro Fitness locations?

Not automatically. One reviewer was turned away because this wasn't his home gym. Confirm multi-location access terms with staff before relying on it.

Is the gym clean and well kept?

A November 2025 review called it clean with well-maintained massage chairs. Equipment detail beyond that is thin in the reviews.

What are the hours?

Listed hours run early morning to late evening on weekdays (about 5:00 to 22:00) and shorter blocks on weekends. Verify current hours before visiting.

This was my first time doing the high intensity, interval training with kickboxing, and it was a fantastic class taught by the best instructor Sophie. Sophie is also my personal trainer and she knows exactly what to do to get me to where I wanna be. I would highly recommend Retro Fitness For all your workout needs. Di'Juan is also a great trainer. The whole staff is warm and inviting and makes you feel like coming back because you are part of the retro family.

I'd actually like to rate them at 0. My husband's retro closed and he drove about 30 mins to go work out at this one. One of the younger employees stopped him about 20-30 mins into his work out and told him to leave because his manager told him this isn't his home gym. They wouldn't even let him finish his work out! This is completely unacceptable. He would've made that his home gym but due to the manager's and this employee's behavior we will not be joining. Learn some customer service behaviors. You could use some training on your approach.

The elderly lady in the front desk with dark hair that works in the morning shift is VERY RUDE. I fist called for an information which some polite gentleman confirmed to be 100% true in the phone (verifying my info in their system), when I went to the place the very next morning she said "oh no, he is my employee and he doesn't know what he is doing, you are just trying to be smart and take advantage of us", again, really rude the whole time. Context: I signed up for a offer which literally says "1 MONTH FREE" and then I had to cancel that membership because I was moving, but the retro membership is still valid until the next 3 weeks, even I first called to confirm this to that same Whippany retro branch, and the gentlemen said "yes sir, don't worry your membership is valid until next 3 weeks, no worries", next morning this lady pulls me up just to tell me I'm trying to take advantage of them? I see a lot of comments complaining about the same thing with this lady in the front-desk, the lady should understand how business works and success, customer service and customer treatment is one of the core aspects.
