London Martial Arts & Fitness Academy, Beckenham

Beckenham, United Kingdom

London Martial Arts & Fitness Academy is on the High Street in New Beckenham. It holds a 4.4 rating from 21 Google reviews.

Two things to establish. It's a martial arts academy rather than a gym. And the record is old: the newest review dates from July 2020, and three of the five were posted in January 2020, which is a cluster rather than a steady stream.

Train As Often As You Like

The most useful thing here comes up in three separate reviews, and it's the business model.

A member in July 2020: "The good thing about this gym is that you have a choice of what martial art you like to study and you can go as many times as you like."

A member in January 2020: "Excellent gym with very experienced instructors. You can train every night in a number of disciplines. Great value for money."

A member in January 2020: "Fantastic place, friendly staff and get a lot for your money!"

Unlimited attendance, multiple disciplines, one fee. Three people independently frame it as value, and two use almost identical words.

That's the pitch, and it's a real one. If you'd train four nights a week, an unlimited membership is a completely different proposition from a per-class studio. Nobody names a figure, so I can't tell you what "great value" costs, but I can tell you what you'd be buying.

Which disciplines? Nobody says. "A number of disciplines" and "a choice of what martial art you like to study" is as specific as this record gets, which for a martial arts academy is the single most important gap.

It's Conditioning As Much As Technique

A member in January 2020: "Awesome gym. Great for anyone who wants to go next level training and combine technique with conditioning."

A professional performer in January 2019: "I'm a professional model/actress and need to keep my fitness and fighting game strong for my physique and showreels. The classes are very challenging but the rewards are well worth it. I would recommend this place to any woman or colleague. The instructor definitely knows how to make you sweat."

Two things worth pulling out of that. She's training for screen fight work, which is a specific and demanding use case, and she explicitly recommends it to other women. In a martial arts record, where the vocabulary usually skews male, that's a signal worth noting.

"Very challenging" is her word. So is "next level" from another member. Nobody describes this as gentle.

The Beginner Question

A member in July 2020 answers it: "Even if you haven't done martial arts before, it still keeps you fit and strong."

So beginners are catered for, according to one member. Set against "very challenging" and "next level" from two others, I'd read this as a place that takes newcomers but works them hard.

That same member also does something I appreciate: they admit lockdown had made them unfit and it would take a while to get back. That's a review with no spin in it.

Who It's Not For

Anyone wanting a gym floor. There are no weights, machines or cardio mentioned by anyone.

Anyone wanting a gentle introduction, going by the words the members themselves use.

What's Missing

No opening hours at all, which for a timetable-driven academy is the fact you'd most need. No phone number. No pricing. No list of which martial arts are taught.

The site is martialarts-fitness.co.uk, and given that everything here predates August 2020, that's where I'd start.

248 High St, New Beckenham, Beckenham BR3 1DZ.
