Start with the money, because that's where the sharpest complaints land. NRG Gym Walsall is a budget gym on St Pauls Street, and two of the five visible reviews are about billing and cancellation going wrong. Before I get to the equipment, let me walk through what those reviewers ran into, because the mechanism behind it is boring and legal and worth understanding before you sign.

The billing complaint, and what's really happening

In December 2019 a member wrote: "it took me several calls and emails just to cancel my membership. Initially, when I called the manager a few days after I joined he said I would get a refund." The same review adds: "the day I joined they had an offer of one month free but they took the payment out straight away." Fair anger. But look at the shape. Budget gyms bill by direct debit on a fixed cycle, and a "first month free" promo usually still collects the joining fee or the first debit up front, then credits the free period later. That doesn't make the confusion the member's fault. It means the question shifts from "how could they charge me" to "what did the sign-up paperwork actually say the debit schedule was?" Read that before you join, not after.

The reviewer even conceded "it could be that I had misunderstood the email and offer," which is honest. Rolling monthly contracts don't cancel themselves either. If you want out, you have to give notice through their process, and one phone call rarely closes it.

The lost-belt complaint

A separate one-star review, also December 2019, describes leaving a belt behind and being unable to get the CCTV checked: "only the manager has access to the cameras" and "he seems too busy to do so." I won't repeat the staff characterizations. The checkable part is structural: one manager, single-person access to cameras, present only during the day. That's a staffing bottleneck, and it's a fair thing to ask about if lost property or security matters to you.

Where the calmer voices agree

The equipment gets steady praise. One four-star member wrote "great range of equipment and weights. I love the space, it's never to crowded. Affordable aswell," then docked a star because "the mirrors, the stairs and the change rooms look dirty and need cleaning more." Another four-star note, "good gym for low cost, good space for exercise, 3 level in the building. Free car parking in Tesco. Only bad point is poor cleaning in shower area." A three-star review flagged missing mirrors for squats and "short bars" that were promised but not added.

See the pattern? Three separate people, same two themes: good value and space, weak cleaning. When multiple independent voices land on the same detail, that's a real signal, not a mood.

What this average measures, and a gap in it

The 4.0 across 35 reviews is a genuine number. But notice the dates on the visible ones: they all cluster in late 2019. The record here trails off right before 2020, which leaves a pandemic-shaped hole in the recent history. I'm not going to guess what happened after. I'm just naming the shape: the freshest visible reviews are old, so cleaning and management issues from then may or may not still stand.

What's missing

No review states a membership price, a day-pass rate, or opening hours. "Affordable" and "low cost" are the closest anyone gets, and those aren't numbers. The listing has no phone number either. If price or hours decide it for you, check the NRG Gym website for the Walsall location directly.

Who it's not for

If you need spotless changing rooms, plenty of mirrors for form work, or responsive lost-property handling, the recurring complaints point the other way. If you want cheap, spacious, three-floor training with free Tesco parking, it fits.

FAQ

Why do reviewers struggle to cancel?

Budget gyms typically run rolling direct-debit contracts that require formal notice to end. Two 2019 reviews describe slow cancellation and a first-month-free promo that still took an early payment. Confirm the exact debit schedule and notice period before joining.

Is the gym clean?

Mixed. Reviewers praise the space and value but three separate notes flag dirty mirrors, stairs, changing rooms and showers. These reviews date to late 2019, so conditions may have changed.

Are prices or hours listed?

No. No review states membership cost or opening times, and the listing has no phone number. Check the NRG Gym Walsall page for current details.

Good gym but there is lack of mirrors in some areas, only one place upstairs lets you do squats with mirror in front of you. There was promised adding "short bars" with different weights (they were at SWEAT) so people can do bicep curs with straight bar but there is still lack of these so people have no choice and either use long bars or skip this exercise. Many guys don't use towels which is disgusting when you need to use equipment after such people...

Decent gym. Very poor management and poor communication between staff. I recently left my belt in the gym and asked staff to see if anything has been handed in and to check the cctv cameras to see where it could be from when I lost it. Staff limited to what they could do and couldn’t access the cctv. They told me only the manager has access to the cameras and they will leave a note for him to check. Next day i approached the staff regarding the belt and asked if the manager had checked the cctv. They said that nothing of the sort has happened and said they will be on the look out for it. The day after I approached the same member of staff again and he said the cameras haven’t been checked and to speak to the manager who was on his way out. The manager was trying to just get rid of me and said email queries to me and rushed out without really trying to see what the problem was. However, I still emailed the gym and I got a reply a day later stating that nothing has been handed in, even though in the email I asked them to check the cameras and they didn’t. So I replied to them asking if they have checked the cameras and still no reply. Very poor management, rude and unprofessional. There is a lack of communication between staff, and there is only one manager who is there in the day and is the only person who can access cameras and he seems too busy to do so.

I don’t know whether I am surprised or shocked at their services. Their communication service with their customers is inadequate, it took me several calls and emails just to cancel my membership. Initially, when I called the manager a few days after I joined he said I would get a refund and offered me something else which I couldn’t quite hear because of the bad service. Then, their response to emails took over a week. I also wish businesses would stop false advertising on their website, they day I joined they had an offer of one month free but they took the payment out straight away. It could be that I had misunderstood the email and offer wrong but I do wish they would communicate properly so the correct understanding can be given. Its annoying when there is no communication street
