Virgin Active Sunninghill is at the Chilli Lane Shopping Centre on Rivonia Road, Sandton. It holds a 4.1 rating from 272 Google reviews. Two members raise things worth knowing before you join, and one of them is the most specific equipment complaint I've read all night.
Somebody Counted The Bikes
A member in October 2019, three stars: "Used to love this gym until all watt bike pros got replaced with watt bike trainers which are horrible. All 7 of the Pros were working fine. We now have 5 trainers which don't register watts properly. Why downgrade your equipment?"
Seven Pros, working, swapped for five Trainers that don't measure power correctly.
If you train on power, that's the whole review. A Watt Bike Trainer and a Watt Bike Pro are different tools, and someone doing structured intervals off a wattage number cannot use a bike that doesn't report one accurately. That member still says the gym is clean and the staff friendly. They're not angry at the place. They're angry at one decision.
Is it still the case? I can't verify it. But it's a checkable thing: look at the bikes.
The Layout Problem
A member in November 2019, three stars: "Tried this gym, but everything is on the same level and I feel a bit exposed. While doing cardio the men's weight section is too close by. The equipment is all close in proximity and I feel too uncomfortable."
That's a layout issue, and it's the sort of thing that decides whether someone renews. Single level, cardio adjacent to the free weights. If training in the sightline of the weights section bothers you, that's a real answer, and no amount of new machines changes the floorplan.
The same member praises the yoga studio as "peaceful and very beautiful" and says the cardio machines are fairly new.
The Long View
The most useful perspective comes from a member of nearly fifteen years: "Home gym for almost 15 years. Peak periods have improved with more machines over the years. The regular refurbs keep the gym in good condition. There are frequent water and aircon issues though."
Fifteen years. Peak crowding has got better, refurbishments happen regularly, and water and air conditioning break often. That's a balanced report from someone with no reason to exaggerate either way, and I'd weight it above everything else here.
Parking, And Finding It
A member describes the club as "secretly tucked away behind the Chilli Lane shopping center" and admits: "The parking turned me off at first however when I got inside the parking seemed like a thing of the past."
So parking looks worse than it turns out to be, and the entrance isn't obvious. Both worth knowing on a first visit.
