The record is old: the newest review dates from October 2019. And the star ratings don't match what people actually wrote, which is the more interesting problem.
Five-Star Reviews That Aren't Five-Star Opinions
Look at this one, from a parent in June 2019. Five stars: "Kids go here swimming. The lessons are a lot cheaper than what Halesowen leisure centre charges. It is old, facilities are average. Could really do with new showers. Staff are nice and helpful. Catherine is the instructor for my kids and they absolutely love her!"
Old. Average. Showers need replacing. That's a five-star review.
And another, October 2019, also five stars: "Swimming pool areas good, free hair dryers, staff could be a bit more friendly."
Staff could be friendlier. Five stars.
I find this genuinely useful, because it tells you what the 4.2 is measuring. People here are rating the value, not the building. They know it's dated and they're happy anyway, largely because of the price and the instructors. If you read the number expecting a modern facility, the words will correct you.
The Price Comparison Is The Best Fact Here
That same parent gives you something no rating can: swimming lessons are "a lot cheaper than what Halesowen leisure centre charges."
A named competitor and a direction. That's worth more than any adjective, and if you're picking between Black Country centres for kids' lessons, it's the whole point. It's also from June 2019, so ring both.
They also name the instructor, Catherine, and say their children love her. Seven years on, I can't tell you whether she's still there, but the specificity is the sort of thing that's true or false rather than vague.
What Else Is There
A member in September 2019: "Great centre. Lovely gym and pool. I used to go to the spin classes which has a purpose built studio. Really enjoyable."
A purpose-built spin studio is a real detail. Note the past tense, though: "I used to go."
A member in October 2019: "My new obsession. Love this place. Fit at 40 here I come."
And my favourite, September 2019: "Jerry's roller disco is amazing value for money."
A roller disco. In a leisure centre. That's the sort of thing you'd never guess from a fitness listing, and if you've got kids on a wet Saturday, it may be the most relevant line on this page.
Who It's Not For
If you want a modern gym with new showers, a member has warned you plainly, and that warning is seven years old, so it's either been fixed or it's got worse.
If you want a serious weights floor, nobody mentions one. The praise here is pool, classes, spin studio, roller disco. This reads as a community leisure centre, and it's priced like one.
