Ponds Forge International Sports Centre

Sheffield, United Kingdom

Ponds Forge is a city sports centre in Sheffield, not a standalone gym, and the reviews make that split obvious. Google tags it as a swimming pool, event venue, and sports activity location, and the 1,665 ratings are spread across a competition pool, a leisure pool with flumes, a gym, and a sports hall. So when you read the 4.2 average, remember it's covering several buildings' worth of experiences at once. That's a big number, and it's honest, but it isn't rating one weight room.

Where the pool wins and where it drags

The strongest note comes from an October 2020 member: "Love this gym, really helped with my mental and physical health over the years. Staff so pleasant, helpful. Absolutely spotless, thank you for all you do for your customers." Contrast that with the family pool. A March 2020 visitor said "We went in the family pool. It was good fun, a couple of flumes, a toddler splash pool and a lazy river with floats to grab hold of. Changing rooms were clean and warm although a couple of non-working showers slowed down the getting changed and out of there." Two experiences, same roof, and both ring true.

The complaints cluster around swimming logistics, not the gym floor. A December 2020 swimmer wrote: "Just been swimming and it was awful. They made us wait 15 mins in the foyer and then we discovered we were in the leisure pool. Only 2 lanes - one of which was taken over by the squad so the other lane was slow - there's no in between!" That's a lane-availability gripe, and it's the kind of thing a big multi-use pool runs into when squads book water. Worth knowing if you swim laps: call ahead and ask which pool and how many lanes are open for public swimming.

Cleaning: two voices, not one

Don't let one review settle the cleaning question. The October 2020 member called it "absolutely spotless." An August 2020 four-star review said the opposite direction: "Very good swimming pool, and the gym is spacious. However, it can do with more cleaning!" When a place this size gets both, I read it as variable by area and time of day rather than a fixed verdict.

What the average is really measuring

A January 2020 spectator gave a level-headed read after a gymnastics competition in the sports hall: "all public areas I went in were to a high standard and very clean," plus notes on paid onsite parking, a cafe, and vending machines. That review does part of my job for me, and it points at something: a chunk of these ratings come from event-goers and spectators, not members. The 4.2 blends daily gym users, casual swimmers, party families, and competition crowds.

What's missing

Every review I can see skips the gym membership price and the swim entry cost. The written record here also thins out after 2020, so the freshest firsthand detail on the weight room specifically is limited. That's a gap I won't fill with guesses.

Who it's not for

A lap swimmer who needs guaranteed open lanes at peak times, or anyone wanting a quiet, single-purpose gym. This is a busy public sports complex, and it behaves like one.

FAQ

Is Ponds Forge just a gym?

No. It's a sports centre with a competition pool, a leisure pool, a gym, and a sports hall. The 4.2 rating covers all of it, so read reviews for the specific facility you plan to use.

How much does entry or membership cost?

No review states a price. Check the Sheffield City Trust venue page or call for current gym and swim rates.

Can I reliably swim lanes here?

One December 2020 swimmer found only two lanes open with a squad using one. If lane swimming matters, phone ahead to confirm pool and lane availability before you go.

Very good swimming pool, and the gym is spacious. However, it can do with more cleaning!

Difficult to give an opinion on the sports facilities I went as a spectator to a gymnastics competition which was held in the sports hall. My experience was a very good one all public areas I went in were to a high standard and very clean. The staff I had any engagement with were helpful and courteous. There is an onsite car park which is charged and a cafe serving hot and cold food and a variety of beverages also there are vending machines with drinks and snacks in.

Just been swimming and it was awful. They made us wait 15 mins in the foyer and then we discovered we were in the leisure pool. Only 2 lanes -one of which was taken over by the squad so the other lane was slow -there’s no in between! Also I can’t believe how many members of staff there were but doing much!!!
