TRX TRICEP EXTENSION

The TRX tricep extension is a bodyweight isolation exercise performed on a suspension trainer that targets the triceps through elbow extension against strap tension. Leaning forward from the anchor point loads the triceps continuously through both the lowering and pressing phases, unlike a cable pushdown where the torso stays fixed against a pad. Because the exerciser's own body angle sets the resistance, the movement scales smoothly from a near-vertical beginner stance to a steep, advanced angle without changing equipment. It also demands core and scapular stability to keep the body rigid throughout the rep.

Muscles Targeted

  • Primary: Triceps brachii (all three heads)
  • Secondary: Anterior deltoids, pectoralis major
  • Tertiary: Core (rectus abdominis, obliques), scapular stabilizers

Starting Position

Shorten the TRX straps to roughly mid-length and face away from the anchor point, gripping one handle in each hand with palms facing each other. Extend your arms overhead in front of you at about eye level, then walk your feet back until your body forms a straight line leaning forward at a slight angle, weight on the balls of your feet. Keep your elbows pointed forward and close to your ears, and brace your core so your hips stay in line with your shoulders.

Execution Steps

  1. Set your lean angle by walking your feet back until you feel meaningful tension in the straps at full arm extension
  2. Bend your elbows and lower your head and torso toward your hands, keeping your upper arms fixed and elbows pointed forward
  3. Descend until your forearms are roughly parallel to the floor or your hands reach beside your head
  4. Pause briefly at the bottom position, where the tricep stretch is greatest
  5. Press back to full elbow extension by contracting the triceps, driving your body back to the starting lean
  6. Keep your body rigid in a straight line from head to heels throughout every rep
  7. Repeat for the desired number of reps without letting your hips sag

Form Cues

  • Keep your elbows fixed and pointed forward throughout the movement - don't let them flare or drop
  • Brace your core hard to prevent your hips from sagging toward the floor
  • Control the descent instead of dropping quickly into the bottom position
  • Adjust foot position, not speed, to change the difficulty of the exercise
  • Keep your wrists neutral and aligned with your forearms during the press

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the elbows drift down and out, which turns the movement into a chest press and shifts load off the triceps - keep the elbows high and fixed forward
  • Allowing the hips to sag, which reduces core tension and can stress the lower back - brace as if bracing for a punch to the stomach
  • Standing too upright for your strength level, which makes the exercise too easy to build strength - walk your feet back to increase the lean angle
  • Rushing the tempo and using momentum instead of muscle tension - slow the descent and control the press
  • Setting the straps too long, which limits range of motion and stability - shorten them to roughly mid-thigh length

Variations

  • Single-arm TRX tricep extension: increases anti-rotation demand and addresses strength imbalances between arms
  • TRX extension to press: adds a chest-press finish for a compound pressing challenge
  • Feet-improved TRX extension: raising the feet on a bench increases the loading angle and difficulty
  • Kneeling TRX tricep extension: reduces the lean angle and core demand for beginners learning the pattern

Tips for Progression

  • Increase the lean angle gradually as your current angle becomes easy for all reps
  • Slow the eccentric (lowering) phase to increase time under tension
  • Progress to single-arm work once bilateral form is solid
  • Add a brief isometric pause at the bottom of each rep

Training Notes

Program the TRX tricep extension 1-2 times per week as an isolation finisher after compound pressing work such as bench press or overhead press. Three sets of 10-15 reps with 45-60 seconds of rest works well; increase difficulty by adjusting foot position and lean angle rather than adding weight, since the strap setup has no external load.
