The lowest review here is the most instructive one, and not for the reason you'd expect. So is a one-star at Core a warning about the gym? Not really. A one-star from September 2019 spends most of its length complaining about staff and a slow-answered voicemail - then admits: "I gave them one star as the actual gym isn't that bad, it's not great but it isn't that bad. It is small and there are not many machines or free weights but you get what you pay for." Read that carefully. The score is a customer-service grievance, not a verdict on the gym floor. The writer separated the two himself. So when you see one star, don't picture a bad gym - picture one bad phone exchange.

Weigh it against the sample. Twenty-five ratings at a 4.3 average means a single one-star only pulls the number down modestly; flip that one review and you're near 4.5. This is a small independent, and the written reviews are unusually specific, which is what I want to see.

What it actually is

A small, independent, 24-hour gym in Woodley, staffed only at certain times. The most detailed review, from July 2023, does my job for me: "Multiple sets of dumbells all the way from 0.5kg to 50kg. Plenty of plates and assorted barbells. All the key machines for strength and cardio. Also a boxing section which can be accessed for an additional fee. Cleaned regularly, air conditioned." A September 2019 five-star adds the room layout: "Somewhat private cardio area, heavy expansive free weight section, a strength and conditioning room and multiple private stretching areas," plus an associated boxing club.

Where voices agree and disagree

Agreement: good free-weight range, welcoming, well-priced, 24-hour access, boxing available for an extra fee. The friction point is etiquette, not the gym. An October 2021 regular writes that "some of the other gym goers don't seem able to put the equipment back," mentioning a "yellow/red card system... I'm not sure how strictly this is enforced if at all." That's a members-behaviour issue every busy independent has.

What the average measures

Honest, small-gym signal: people who like a no-frills, equipment-first room rate it high; the one detractor rated the front desk. The reviews match the 4.3 - a solid local gym, not a luxury chain, and nobody pretends otherwise.

What's missing

No membership price is quoted beyond "a great price" and "you get what you pay for." The boxing section costs extra, but no figure is given. Staffed hours are vague ("staffed at certain times during the week"). If cost decides it for you, you'll need to call (+44 118 449 2094).

Who it's not for

Anyone who wants a big machine selection or full-time front-desk staff. It's small, it's basic, and a couple of reviewers say so plainly.

FAQ

Is Core Fitness a 24-hour gym?

Yes, per multiple reviews, staffed only at certain times.

Dumbbells from 0.5kg to 50kg, plates, barbells, key strength and cardio machines, and a boxing section (extra fee), per a July 2023 review.

Is it good value?

Reviewers repeatedly call it well-priced, but no one lists an actual membership cost.

What's the deal with the one-star review?

Best gym in the immediate area. There is something for everyone. Somewhat private cardio area, heavy expansive free weight section, a strength and conditioning room and multiple private stretching areas. There is also a boxing club associated with the gym for those looking to box. All this for a great price! To add, the staff and trainers there are all very knowledgeable and happy to help whenever asked. So if you're looking for a proper gym that is welcoming and full of equipment get yourself down to Core.

I’ve been coming to Core Fitness since May of this year. Overall a really nice little gym, fairly basic in terms of equipment but does everything I need it to so can’t complain there. The only frustrating thing is that some of the other gym goers don’t seem able to put the equipment back once they’ve used it whether that be plates, dumbbells or bars which can be quiet frustrating. There is a yellow/red card system in place I believe but I’m not sure how strictly this is enforced if at all

Terrible! I had a query so left a voicemail, it took 3 weeks of chasing to get an answer and then staff were extremely unhelpful. I ended up speaking with Mark (the owner) and he was more dismissive and confrontational then the other staff, sending sarcastic messages etc. All in all they need a lesson in customer service and should not be customer facing employees. I gave them one star as the actual gym isn't that bad, it's not great but it isn't that bad. It is small and there are not many machines or free weights but you get what you pay for. If you decide to become a member here just hope you don't ever have to deal with the staff.
