Connect Gym Navigator to ChatGPT

ChatGPT speaks MCP too, so the exact same connector works here. The path is a little more buried than Claude's, and the wording OpenAI uses shifts every few months, but the idea doesn't change: add a remote MCP server, paste the URL, approve it.

Setup, step by step

    Turn on connectors / Developer mode

    In Settings, open Connectors (you may need to enable Developer mode or beta features first, depending on your plan). Custom MCP connectors are a paid-plan feature on ChatGPT, so a free account won't see the option.

    Add a custom MCP server

    Choose Add connector or Import, then paste https://coach.gymnavigator.com/mcp as the server URL. Give it a name like "Gym Navigator" so it's easy to spot in the tool picker.

    Authorize it

    Approve the connection. As with Claude, signing in with Google is optional and only matters if you want your journal saved to your own Drive across sessions.

    Enable it in the chat

    Open the tools / connectors menu inside a chat and switch Gym Navigator on for that conversation. Now ask away: "Find a gym in Austin" or "Log today's session."

Good to know

  • OpenAI renames this feature often (Connectors, Developer mode, GPT Actions). The URL you paste never changes.
  • You may have to toggle the connector on per conversation rather than globally.
  • Custom connectors need a paid ChatGPT plan. Free accounts can't add them.

What to ask once it's connected

The connector exposes eight tools. You never call them by name, you just talk, and ChatGPT picks the right one. Each tool has its own page with example prompts:
